Stand up to Violence Social Worker (Level II)

Gun violence is a disease. Jacobi Hospital’s Stand Up to Violence (SUV) program is seeking community-minded social workers who are committed to serving and supporting all survivors of violence.

Our program is expanding, and we are hiring several social workers to staff a holistic approach to healing our communities from the scourges of gun and community violence.

SUV is NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi’s hospital-based community violence prevention program. The SUV program is an evidenced-based, community violence prevention program that treats violence as a disease. The program uses a three-pronged approach to address violence – the hospital response, community outreach, and a mental health component. Our unique hospital-based approach allows us to intervene at a critical moment; while individuals are hospitalized after injury due to violence. Credible messengers build rapport with patients while they are in the hospital to prevent retaliation and provide resources, social support, and guidance even after discharge. Simultaneously, credible messengers maintain a consistent presence in our target areas to mediate conflict and build relationships with people who are at the highest risk of shooting others or being shot.

The social work team provides therapeutic mental health services such as one on one counseling, groups, and connections to resources like employment opportunities, job training programs, transportation, and if needed, relocations services and other emergency services for survivors of community violence. We also assist admitted patients in meeting their discharge needs and arranging for their safe transition back into the community.

Our team is expanding. You’d be a great fit if you:

  • Have a passion for working with youth
  • Enjoy supporting the work and wellbeing of people with lived experience
  • Value and prioritize building relationships with your colleagues
  • Love working with interdisciplinary teams composed of people with lived experience, medical professionals, and faith-based leaders
  • Have a great sense of humor and are adaptable to change
  • Want to be a part of an innovative program where your feedback and opinions will be valued and listened to
